The Bodmin & Wenford Railway Trust has purchased an Autocoach |
||
|
Autocoach No 232 was built at Swindon in
1951 and was designed for use on branch lines and other low traffic areas.
When coupled to a suitably fitted steam locomotive the train could be operated by a Driver standing in a special compartment at one end (right in photo) when traveling in one direction and with in the loco cab on the return journey. This was to avoid the engine having to "run round" the train and saved time. It was possible to have a train comprising of up to 4 coaches with the locomotive in the middle but this was rare. |

The coach has previously been converted for
use as a Directors' Inspection Saloon and as such has only arm chairs and
a small bar area inside. The coach was purchased by the Bodmin & Wenford Railway Trust late last year and it was decided to take it to Laira Depot in Plymouth for the wheels to be machined prior to its arrival at Bodmin.

The coach requires extensive restoration
before it can be used as an Autocoach including removal of the DMU type
corridor connection, overhaul/reinstallation of all of the Driver's
controls, replacement of internal bulkheads, recommissioning of external
doors and complete internal refurbishment. Arrangements for this refurbishment have not yet been decided but it is possible that the coach may be restored away from Bodmin. |
